Join us for stunning sacred music that illuminates our remembrance of Jesus’ ordeal
The Holy Hour on Good Friday begins at 2.00 pm, commemorating the moment when Jesus, at the ninth hour, during his agony on the cross cried out “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
[In Jesus’ day hours were counted from sunrise at approximately 6.00 am. So the ninth hour as recorded in the Gospels would have been 3. 00 pm.]
This special service will feature movements from Giovanni Pergolesi’s “Stabat Mater”, interspersed with the Gospel narrative to the point where Jesus uttered the words, “It is finished.”
This beautiful and inspiring piece is a celebrated expression of the sorrow, grief and triumph of the crucifixion as witnessed by the Blessed Virgin Mary. The words “Stabat Mater” mean “The Mother was standing.”
